It was time for a new coffee table. I looked around and didn't quite find what I was looking for or the quality was lacking. I really like the farmhouse style and was intrigued by the rustic and distressed look. Well, being the stubborn man I am (aren't we all) I decided I would try my hand at building one. The rest is history. Before we get started, make sure to follow me on YouTube, Instagram and FaceBook to keep up with all my latest projects! I used all common pine lumber for the build. 4x4's, 2x4's, and 2x12's. I started with the leg assemblies. getting all my pieces cut to the correct size and using my Kreg R3 pocket hole jig to screw them together. Everything was going smooth until I got to the X's. It was probably the most difficult part for me (considering this was the first piece of furniture I have built). But I pulled it off and only had to repeat it one more time..woo! I finished the second leg assembly and installed the bottom shelf. The shelf was three pieces glued and pocket holed together. I then installed a top support beam for stability as well as support the top. The table top was three pieces glued and pocket holed together. I used clamps to keep it tight and straight while the glue dried. Before attaching the top, I had stained it with Minwax Dark Walnut. After drying I attached the top to the table and got ready for paint. I painted the first coat of the table with a matte grey color and did a top coat of white latex paint. Once everything was dry, I sanded the table revealing the grey underlayer to achieve my desired distressed look. After three coats of Minwax Polycrylic the table came out beautifully. I would look at it and not believe that I was able to create that. After all this time, it's still holding up great and is a constant reminder of why I love woodworking.
